Teeth grinding causing a toothache?

Toothaches hurt and when you do have one all you want to do is relieve your toothache. It’s certainly no fun to have a throbbing painful tooth. The cause of a toothache may be anything. For example, you may have sensitive teeth and if so then hot or cold may cause toothache pain. This may occur even if you eat something sweet and you feel a slight twinge of pain. Other people will have a toothache because they have a sinus infection or inflamed sinuses. This will result in a desire to relieve toothache on all the top teeth, especially the back ones.

Some people need to relieve toothache pain because of their problem with teeth grinding. On the other hand, if you have recently had dental work then you may find your teeth continue to be sensitive and you want something to relieve toothache pain for weeks. However, there are certain types of tooth pain that warrant a dentist visit. For example, if when you bite down on any type of food you feel a pain that is sharp then you could have a filling that has come loose, a cavity, damaged pulp, or your tooth could be cracked. If the pain persists up to half an hour later then this is an additional sign that you have caused additional damage to your tooth and/or pulp. If you have the typical signs of toothache like swelling, severe pain, and tooth sensitivity then you will definitely want to get to a dentist as quickly as possible.

Keep in mind the amount of pain you are feeling will signal how quickly you should get to the dentist. For example, if you can’t sleep or your daily functioning is affected then you will need to make an appointment as quickly as possible. This is especially so if you have an abscessed tooth because the infection could spread throughout your gums and into your jawbones.

In general, putting off dental pain is a bad idea because it will usually result in more pain and more money when you arrive at the dentist! However, if you are experiencing a toothache at 4 am then you can incorporate some of the following tips to help you get through the pain until you can get to the dentist.

Painkillers

One method to help you make it until the dentist opens is to take some over the counter painkillers like ibuprofen, acetaminophen, or aspirin. Only take these drugs as recommended and check the contraindications.

Cold Compress

Another option would be to place a cold compress on the cheek on the side of the mouth where you have a toothache. The compress may assist in pain management and help the swelling decrease.

There are other pain relief options as well, but these are just a few that will help you manage your pain until you can get in and see the dentist!
