What is a tooth treatment?

These days there are countless different treatments available from dentists when it comes to helping people care for their teeth and preventing caries (cavities) and gum disease. For some reason however, many have an innate fear of dental treatments due to ridiculous myths that revel in nothing but scaring people without reason.

Dentists are actually akin to doctors. Having studied for seven years in most cases and then attended a residency program, becoming a dentist is not easy. Today’s dentists aren’t the butchers and blacksmiths of 18th century dentistry, but instead highly skilled and experienced health professionals. Their goal isn’t to remove teeth or cause pain, but to help keep your teeth as healthy as possible.

Today, the most common dental treatment has to be the application of fillings. With dental cavities becoming so common, it’s estimated that 90% of the population will get a filling at some point during their life. The good news is that dental fillings are straightforward, affordable and also one of the easiest ways to stop tooth decay.

However, arguably the most important dental / tooth treatment is that of regular dental check-ups followed by a dental cleaning at least twice yearly. The reason for this is that check-ups help to spot problems, and dental cleaning removes tartar and scale which can’t be removed through brushing. With good hygiene and regular visits, your teeth will last for a lifetime.

Now that dental treatments are quick, easy and painless, still people are fearful of dentists. Perhaps the most feared tooth treatment has to be the root canal where the mere description of the procedure sends many people into shock. Indeed, while it does sound gruesome, all that a root canal does is hollow out the inside of one’s tooth. The resultant ‘hollow’ is then filled with a dental compound that both disinfects and keeps the tooth from becoming more damaged.

Gum disease is another area where dentists are needed due to the fact that advanced gum disease and periodontal problems are largely invisible. Many people are suffering from problems such as periodontal disease and they don’t even know it. This disease is probably one of the most serious problems that can occur as it eventually eats away at the periodontal bone which hold teeth in place.

On the other hand, while many dental treatments sound scary – cosmetic dentists also perform a whole range of procedures such as tooth whitening, which aim to give people that perfect smile. From dental bridges to braces and even dental implants, there are a whole range of tooth treatments that can leave your smile looking better than ever before.

Cosmetic dentistry can be expensive, but for many it’s essential. Often children have problems with teeth that must be fixed with tooth treatments such as braces. Thankfully, kids of today don’t have the inherent fear of dentists that adults do, so as long as you get them to the dentist, there shouldn’t be any problem in making sure their teeth are healthy for a long time to come.
