Wisdom teeth extraction

Have you been experiencing pain from your wisdom teeth? If so you may require a wisdom teeth extraction which can be quite painful but is almost necessary for most dental patients. Typically you will have all 4 wisdom teeth between the mid to late teens and your early twenties. However, some individuals may get them earlier or later than this so if your different don’t be alarmed.

Wisdom teeth extraction is one of the most common procedures done at the dentist aside from fillings, regular extractions and cleanings. This is because when you do get your wisdom teeth they often grown in wrong causing overcrowding in your mouth or because only a portion of the wisdom teeth grows through the gum lines. When this happens wisdom teeth extraction needs to take place as soon as possible because it can allow food particles to accumulate under the gum line or cause an infection to appear.

If your wisdom teeth have grown in incorrectly it can cause damage to your jawbone due to the other teeth that are already in place. Without the adequate amount of space for each tooth the pain can be intense. The dentist will require x-rays to be taken in order to determine how bad the wisdom teeth are and how to plan for the wisdom teeth extraction.

Once the procedure has been determined the dentist will discuss how things will be done before it actually takes place. Since they are in such bad shape and because of the location of the teeth the wisdom teeth extraction will require a surgical procedure from an oral surgeon. You will also be given anesthesia which helps to numb your entire mouth so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. This usually wears off about 3-5 hours after the procedure so you should be prepared for some pain after your wisdom teeth extraction takes place. Once the gum line has been cut the dentist will proceed with the wisdom teeth extraction by removing the teeth and putting in a few stitches to keep the affected area closed for healing purposes. This will help to keep food particles from the gum line, decrease the amount of bleeding and help to fight against infection.

Fortunately the dentist knows that there is pain that accompanies the wisdom teeth extraction and will send you home with a prescription for an antibiotic and for pain medication. The antibiotic will help to prevent any future and infections and clear up any that may be lingering. It’s important that you follow all of the instructions that your dentist gives you to help ensure a full and healthy recovery. The pain medication should be only used as directed.

You should also avoid eating anything sharp or too hot or cold so you don’t damage the stitches that are in your mouth. It usually takes about a week or so for them to heal but will still be soft so taking care of them properly is important. Even though a wisdom teeth extraction is fairly simple and doesn’t take a long period of time to complete it’s important that you follow all instructions and make oral hygiene a top priority.
